…. they were unschooled, ordinary men …. they had been with Jesus …. the crippled man healed standing with them – Acts 4:13,14

What’s really important about speaking in tongues, filled with the Holy Spirit?

Tommy Barnnett:

 …  I find as I seek to live in the will of God, my dreams are His dreams, and He has the capacity to make those dreams come true.

The Holy Spirit becomes my prayer partner.
As the firsthand revelations unfold from God,
the Holy Sprit is there, real , in person,
inspiring my heart, praying with me and encouraging my dream …

I find the older I get, the more I have to depend on God.
The more I seek his face.
The more prayer I require.
Charles Wesley wrote that “nothing is accomplished except by prayer.”
I believe now more than ever that his statement is true.
The blessing of God in our lives is predicated on the time we spend with Him.
I know the more I pray, the more power.
The more study, the more powerful the message to penetrate people’s lives.
The more I thank God for mercy, the more tears I shed.
The more I say “Fill me,” the more filling I desire.

Leadership has its deep trials and times of failure and defeat.  One “called” does not turn back when the call is deposited in the Lord’s treasury.

As a pastor’s son, raised in an Assembly of God home, I watched people misuse the power of the Holy Spirit.
I had been taught all my life that when you receive the Holy Spirit, it gives you power to
And yet some who spoke in tongues were among the worst witnesses I knew, whilst some who did not speak in tongues were among the greatest.

I had been taught that the Holy Spirit made you live a holy life.  I worked with people lacking that persuasion whose lives were holier.

I had been told that the Holy Spirit was a great comforter, yet I had noticed that some of the people who gave my dad the worst time in the church were those who spoke in tongues.  And some of our sweetest friends did not.

You can see why I was in a maelstrom of confusion.  I searched a long time for answers.

I was getting ready to build a church.  I wanted to do it like Jesus did.  So I started asking questions about the Holy Spirit.  I started to circle the continents to talk to people and great men who built churches.

I learned the Holy Spirit is our comforter.
I discovered He is a gentleman.
I found out that when the Spirit of God moves, it is with decency and order.
I found the gifts of the Holy Spirit are operated by the Holy Spirit,
and I came to the life-changing conclusion that the Holy Spirit
is not just an experience,
but is truly a person

If you want to be a leader you must earn that leadership  Never be assertive.
You must abide in the Book and search to know God.

I believe in leadership by inspiration — not intimidation!
… Suddenly multitudes were following Jesus.  Jesus seldom asserted His authority, but presented Himself to the people as a qualified leader.
He earned their trust, and some “chose” to follow Him. …

Jesus did not spread the word that He was the King.  Even though it was so written.
He was earning his title with total commitment and obedience to His Father.
He lived the life that spawned followers.

… I am convinced that the single most effective reason for our church growth is the Holy Spirit.
I do what I can do, and the Holy Spirit does what I cannot do.
If my churches are measured by what I can do, that is “natural” effort.
Great things happen only “supernaturally”.

So, .. What’s really important about speaking in tongues or the gifts of the Spirit, or prophecy, etc?

The Holy Spirit !!

the presence the Holy Spirit, the  work of the Holy Spirit
in lives that are transformed
with the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

I am the vine, you are the branches;
he who abides in Me
and I in him,

he bears much fruit,

for apart from Me
you can do nothing

John 15:5 (NASB)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity,
but of power,
and self-discipline.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control;
against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22 (NIV)

Such hope [in God’s promises] never disappoints us,
because God’s love
has been abundantly poured out within our hearts

through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:5 (AMP)

Pursue love, …
Follow the way of love, …
Let love be your highest goal! …
14:1 (NASB, NIV, NLT)

11 But you,     man of God,
flee from all this,
and pursue
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
12 Fight the good fight of the faith.
Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called
when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:11, 12 (NIV)

How do we discern if something is from the Holy Spirit?

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes,
He will guide you into all the truth; …
John 16:13 (NASB)

14 He   [the Holy Spirit]
will glorify Me,   [Jesus]
because He will take from what is Mine
and declare it to you.
John 16:14 (HCSB)

… the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father,
He will testify and bear witness about Me.   [Jesus]
John 15:26 (AMP)

The Holy Spirit will glorify Jesus,
testify and bear witness about Jesus,
and guide us in the Truth of God’s Word to us.

So, what’s the importance and outcome of  being filled with the Holy Spirit?

Jesus on earth:

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan
and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness
for forty days, being tempted by the devil.

14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
Luke 4:1, 13 (NASB)

Early church:

But you shall receive power
when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you shall be witnesses to Me

in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

When they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues, glorifying the Lord,

… —we hear them in our own tongues
speaking of the mighty deeds of God.

For they were hearing them speaking with tongues
and exalting God. …

Acts 2:11,  10:46  (NASB)

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked,
“By what power or by what name have you done this?”
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,  said   to them,

10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:7-12 (NKJV)

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken;
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and they spoke the word of God   with boldness.
Acts 4:31 (NKJV)

24 Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith.
And many people were brought to the Lord.
Acts  11:24 (NLT)

filled with the Holy Spirit,
spoke the word of God
many people were brought to the Lord

… and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit

And Stephen, full of grace and power,
was performing great wonders and signs among the people.

10 But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and
the Spirit with which he
(Stephen) was speaking.

7:55 But being full of the Holy Spirit, he (Stephen) gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; 56 and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
Acts 6:5,8,10,  7:55 (NASB)

But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, 10 and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord? 11 Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand.
12 Then the proconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at the teaching of the Lord.
Acts 13:9-12 (NASB)

48 When the Gentiles heard this,
they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord;
and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.

52 And the disciples were continually filled
with joy and
with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 13:48, 49, 52 (NASB)

The Spirit of truth will bring glory
to me,  (Jesus) …

John 16:14 (NCV)

God’s love
has been abundantly poured out within our hearts

through the Holy Spirit
Romans 5:5 (AMP)

Thus, as a result of being filled with the Holy Spirit,
bears fruit in:

spoke the word of God with boldness.
many people were brought to the Lord.
the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region
great wonders and signs among the people
disciples filled with joy
receive power, be witnesses to Jesus … to the end of the earth
speaking the mighty deeds of God … exalting the Lord

“The disciples of Jesus were all filled with the Spirit, and the Word was published;
and when the Spirit of God comes down upon the church,
and we are anointed, the Word will be published in the streets,
in the lanes and in the alleys;
there will not be a dark cellar nor a dark attic, nor a home
where the Gospel will not be carried by some loving heart,
if the Spirit comes upon God’s people
in demonstration and in power.”

— D L Moody

17 So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 So then, you will know them by their fruits.
Matthew 7:17-20 (NASB)

What matters is … fruit!
labels, names, titles, brands don’t matter.

Seek out … fruitful people filled with the Holy Spirit,
& the fruit of the Spirit,
filled with God’s Word, led by the Spirit,
blessing others with God’s Word, with the Holy Spirit.

Those who live according to the flesh
have their minds set on what the flesh desires;
those who live in accordance with the Spirit
have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

The mind governed by the flesh is death,
the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;
if by the Spirit
you put to death
the misdeeds of the body,
you will live.

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God
are the children of God.

Romans 8:5, 6, 14, 15 (NIV)

Observe what Paul wrote:

18 …  but be filled with the Spirit,
19 speaking to one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
Ephesians 5:18-21 (NKJV)

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom,
teaching and admonishing one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatever you do in word or deed,
do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Colossians 3:16, 17 (NKJV)

Be filled with the Holy Spirit, and be filled with the Word of God.

God is spirit,
and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth
John 4:24 (NASB)

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes,
He will guide you
into all the truth; …

John 16:13 (NASB)

… and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and they spoke
the word of God

with boldness.
Acts 4:31 (NKJV)

In growing to be more like Jesus, the fruit of the Holy Spirit,

Jesus prayed:
17 Sanctify them in the truth;
Your word is truth.
John 17:17 (NASB)

Peter wrote:
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,
by the sanctifying work of the Spirit,
to obey Jesus Christ
and be sprinkled with His blood:

May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.
1 Peter 1:2 (NASB)

Sanctify,  to make holy, purify, consecrate
by the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit
in our lives.

The Holy spirit never enters a man and then lets him live like the world.
You can be sure of that
— A W Tozer

The Lord promised,

‘For I will pour out water on the thirsty land
And streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring
And My blessing on your descendants;
Isaiah 44:3 (NASB)

37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast,
Jesus stood and cried out, saying,

If anyone is thirsty,
let him come to Me
and drink.

38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said,
‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

39 But this He spoke of the Spirit,
whom those who believed in Him were to receive; …
John 7:37-39 (NASB)

The Holy Spirit is a person, He is not enthusiasm. He is not courage. He is not energy. He is not the personification of all good qualities, like Jack Frost is the personification of cold weather. Actually, the Holy Spirit is not the personification of anything. He is a Person, the same way you are a person, but not material substance. He has individuality. He is one being and not another. He has will and intelligence He has hearing. He has knowledge and sympathy and ability to love and see and think. He can hear, speak, desire, grieve and rejoice. He is a Person.
— A. W. Tozer

 … it is possible to run a church and all of its activity
without the Holy Spirit.”

— A W Tozer

“We all need it [the filling of the Holy Spirit] together,
and let us not rest day nor night until we possess it;
if that is the uppermost thought in our hearts,
God will give it to us if we just hunger and thirst for it and say,
‘God helping me, I will not rest until endued with power from on high.’”

— D L Moody

“If anyone is thirsty,
let him come to Me
and drink.

 He who believes in Me,
as the Scripture said,
‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
