…. they were unschooled, ordinary men …. they had been with Jesus …. the crippled man healed standing with them – Acts 4:13,14

Eternal Life … now or in the future?

What is Eternal Life ?
How do we obtain it ?
When does it begin ?

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NKJV)
… He has put eternity in their hearts …

Throughout history, man has been trying to find the secret elixir of vibrant youth and immortality.  Deep down, all of us desire to live forever; death is a dreaded end into the unknown, like a forgotten smouldered flame.

After the fall of man in Genesis 3, man was banished from Eden.  God said,22… He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.
23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. (Gen3:22-24 NIV)

At His first coming, Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:51 NIV)

And in finally after the second coming of Jesus,  14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.  (Revelations 22:14 NIV),
By God’s grace, through Jesus, we are restored to partake of  the tree of life.

When Jesus came, He said,

John 10:10 (NASB)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Jesus came to give us life, abundant life,
in contrast, the enemy steals, kill and destroy, i.e. murder/destroy the abundant life.

At the last supper,

John 14:5,6 (NIV)
Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going,
how do we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life;
no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Jesus is the Life.
Jesus  is the only way to this Life.

Later, Jesus explains eternal life,

John 17:3 (NIV)
This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom You have sent

Eternal life is personally knowing God through Jesus.
Encountering God now, and on a daily basis, eternally.

Colossians 1:26,27 (NIV)
26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery,
which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Eternal life is life now, and forever with Jesus in us individually,
in fellowship with Him.

1 Corinthains 1:9, 2 Corinthains 13:14 (NIV)
1:9 God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

13:14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Eternal life starts the moment we believe in Jesus and receive Him into our lives.

 John 5:24 (NLT)
I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life

John 3:36 (NIV)
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

 Galatians 2:20 (NIV)
 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

1 John 5:11,13,20 (NIV)
11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

As we spend time with God daily and in His word,
let’s not lose sight of knowing Him, experiencing Him and letting Him lead us now.

John 5:39 (NIV)
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life;
it is these that testify about Me;

Like the hearers in John 5, let’s not miss the most important One in His Word.

Here’s how John describes his fellowship with the Lord:

1 John 1:1-4 (NIV)
What was from the beginning,
what we have
what we have seen with our eyes,
what we have
looked at
touched with our hands,
concerning the Word of Life—

and the life was manifested,
and we have
seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life,
which was with the Father and was manifested to us—

what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also,
so that you too may have fellowship with us;
and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.

These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.

Let’s pray with Paul:

Ephesians 1:15-17, Philippians 3:10,11 (NIV)
1:15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better

3:10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

How does one received eternal life?

John 11:25-27 (NASB)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life;
he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,

26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.
Do you believe this?”

27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.”

John 3:36 (NASB)
He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him

Romans 10:9,10 (NIV)
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Please pray to receive Jesus today, thank you.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living
Just because He lives!
